Arshdeep has great potential and has grown tremendously as a pacer – Jonty Rhodes

The 23-year-old pacer’s phenomenal rise as a cricketer was seen in the T20 World Cup with his 10-wicket haul from 6 games

Former South African star batter Jonty Rhodes praises the Punjab-based pacer Arshdeep Singh as one of the finest players with great potential. In two years, the 23-year-old pacer has grown tremendously in his game and he was one of the positives of India’s T20 World Cup campaign. Arshdeep’s phenomenal rise as a cricketer can be seen in the World Cup with his 10-wicket haul out of 6 games with an economy of 7.80. he has been the team’s leading wicket-taker with his ability to swing the ball both ways.

Arshdeep had impressed the selectors with his amazing performance in the Indian Premier League and he debuted in July this year. The death over specialist Bumrah’s injury leads him to play the World Cup for India alongside seniors Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammad Shami.

Ever since his debut, many compared him with Pakistan’s Wasim Akram. Rhodes admits that Arshdeep has great potential but compares him to Pakistan’s legendary fast bowler Wasim Akram will be too much for him to put him under pressure.

“I think that’s putting him under a lot of pressure, to compare him to the great Wasim Akram, the sultan of swing,” Rhodes told reporters.

“He’s someone who has great potential and possibility of having a fantastic career. But you start to compare players to the ones who played before them, that puts them under unnecessary pressure. He wants to be the best Arshdeep Singh.”

Rhodes analyses Arshdeep’s growth in the last 2 years and compares it with the fast bowler Bumrah. Bumrah also had a quick progression in the game.

“Arshdeep has certainly grown in the last two years and that’s been the case with the Indian fast bowlers. You look at a Bumrah and his progression was so so quick and Arshdeep has done the same, he is a young fast bowler, willing to learn and listen and he puts in the hard yards.

Rhodes also praises Arshdeep for his performance in the powerplay.

“He does swing the ball and has been a revelation at the death. He’s great in the powerplay, has got good control and he can come around the wicket like Wasim Akram effectively,”.

Rhodes worked with Arshdeep during the IPL as Punjab King’s fielding coach and from there he realized Arshdeep’s capabilities.

“He’s someone who has great potential and possibility of having a fantastic career. But you start to compare players to the ones who played before them, that puts them under unnecessary pressure. He wants to be the best Arshdeep Singh.”

Following the T20 World Cup, team India is on a New Zealand tour for a T20 and ODI series. Arshdeep is part of both squad as a team of youngsters are going for the matches with the top players resting. Shubman Gill, Umran Malik, Ishan Kishan, and Sanju Samson are also part of the team.
