Bumrah to break Lara’s Test Cricket World Record

Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah hit the most expensive over in India vs England Test cricket to create history by breaking Brian Lara’s world record of most runs scored in an over in Test Cricket. Bumrah won over Lara by a single run, a total of 29 runs in a single over. The record stayed with Lara for 18 years.

It was with South African left-arm spinner Robin Peterson in 2003 that Lara scored 28 runs in an over. It included six legal deliveries of 4 fours and 2 sixes. Former Australian player George Bailey had also scored 28 runs in an over. But in terms of boundary count, he was behind Lara. South African player Keshav Maharaj also scored 28 runs in an over but a bouncer scored him a boundary.

Bumrah remained unbeaten on 31 out of 6 balls with 4 boundaries and 2 sixes in the last Test match. The epic over of Captain Bumrah started with a mistimed ball by Stuart Broad that went for a boundary. The frustrated Broad then bowled a bouncer which resulted in five wides. The next ball was a no-ball and it went for a six. The next three balls were swung in various directions for boundaries. They were a full toss over mid-on, a fine leg one, and a deep backward square leg. In the final ball, Bumrah retrieved a yorker and went looking for a single. In total, Bumrah scored 29 runs in the single over and remained not out in the end.

Hence, Stuart Broad bowled the costly over in Test cricket by giving 35 runs in an over on the second day at Edgbaston. The remaining six runs were scored by Mohammed Siraj. Broad is the same bowler who struck for six sixes in a single over by Yuvraj Singh in the first World T20 in 2007. Here in the 84th over of the Indian first innings in the fifth scheduled Test, Broad gave away 35 runs including 5 wides and a no-ball.

Former Indian head coach Ravi Shastri, who was also there in commentary when Yuvraj hit 6 sixes in an over, commented that “And today what I saw was bizarre. It’s something we would have never imagined the world record from Jusprit Bumrah, batting at number 10 as captain of India for the first time… going past Lara George Bailey Keisha Maharaj. 29 from the over the bowler the same, who Yuvraj hit for six sixes, Stuart Broad, going for that many. And the entire over went for 35, which is again a world record, the previous highest was 28”.
