Joe Root with Sir Alastair Cook becomes the youngest player to complete 10,000 runs in Test cricket. Root set the record with a century on the fourth day of the Lord’s Cricket Test (ENG vs NZ 1st Test) against New Zealand. Root and Cook arrived at the 10,000 club when they were 31 years and 157 days old. Master blaster Sachin Tendulkar (31 years and 326 days), Jacques Kallis (33 years and 133 days), and Ricky Ponting (33 years and 163 days) are the other players in the top five.
Joe Root reached his 26th Test century in the second innings on the fourth day of the Lord’s Cricket Test, scoring two runs off a deep square in the sixth ball of the 76th over off Tim Southee. At the same ball, the former English captain became a member of the Elite 10,000 club. Root is the 14th batsman to complete 10,000 runs in Tests. And only the second English player. Root scored this achievement in his 118th Test. Alastair Cook is the only English Cricketer to have scored 12,472 runs in 161 Tests, ahead of Joe Root.
India’s legend Sunil Gavaskar was the first batsman to score 10,000 runs in Tests. This was in 1987. This was followed by Alan Border, Steve Waugh, Brian Lara, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Ricky Ponting, Jack Kallis, Mahela Jayawardene, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Kumar Sangakkara, Alastair Cook, and Younis Khan.
Joe Root’s class century helped England to a thrilling five-wicket victory over New Zealand at Lord’s. On the fourth day of the first session, England set a target of 277 for victory in the first Test of the series, losing five wickets in 78.5 overs. Root 115 * off 170 balls and Ben Foakes 32 * off 92 balls remained unbeaten.
