Mohammad Siraj will replace injured Jasprit Bumrah in the South Africa T20I series

BCCI has named Mohammad Siraj as Jasprit Bumrah’s stand-in for the current South Africa T20I series when Bumrah has reportedly suffered a back stress fracture.

Bumrah was not part of the Asia Cup 2022 due to his back injury. But then, he was picked for the T20I series against Australia and played the second and third T20Is. After that, he was included in the South Africa T20 series and came to Trivandrum for the 1st T20 match. But he didn’t participate in the opening match. According to Rohit Sharma, Bumrah was being rested after complaining of back discomfort.

“Jasprit Bumrah complained of back pain during India’s practice session on Tuesday. The BCCI medical team assessed him. He is ruled out of the first #INDvSA T20I.”, BCCI tweeted after the toss of the India vs South Africa first T20 match.

Due to the stress fracture in his back, Bumrah may miss the South Africa T20I series. Also, he may likely miss the coming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

Bumrah is scheduled to arrive at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru for a further check-up. The medical staff will check him to determine whether he needs surgery. However, he won’t be able to play for a period of time.

BCCI’s medical team may wait for a few days to monitor Bumrah to analyse his condition before taking a final decision on his participation in the T20 World Cup. If he can work his way back to peak fitness, even if not from the start, he may play at some point in the World Cup.

But on Thursday, PITI reported that the fast bowler would miss the T20 World Cup.

“Bumrah is not going to play the World T20 for sure. He has a serious back condition. It’s a stress fracture and he could be out for a period of six months.”

If the latest injury is a stress fracture on the back, it will be his second injury in the last 3 years. In September 2019, Bumrah was diagnosed with a ‘minor stress fracture in his lower back’.

As India is directly qualified for the Super 12 round, India can make changes in the squad till October 15 without the permission from ICC.

If Bumrah doesn’t make it to World Cup, he will be the second major player who misses the tournament. All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja is the first player who ruled out due to a knee injury.

Mohammad Siraj will replace Jasprit Bumrah

Mohammad Siraj will replace Bumrah in the ongoing T20 series against South Africa. It was the national selection committee that choose the pacer for the squad.

“The All-India Senior Selection Committee named Mohd. Siraj as replacement for injured Jasprit Bumrah for the remainder of the T20I series against South Africa. Bumrah has sustained a back injury and is currently under the supervision of the BCCI Medical Team.”

With Siraj’s experience in bowling in significant matches, Siraj can be a substitute for Bumrah. Siraj is currently representing Warwickshire in the County Championship in England.
