India’s wicket-keeper batsman Sanju Samson is likely to be India’s vice-captain for the India vs South Africa ODI series which will be commenced after the ongoing T20 series. With the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup ahead of next month, many senior players are expected to be rested. Even though the Indian squad for the T20I series has already been announced, the ODI squad is not yet finalized. The Indian selectors may likely finalize the squad in the next few days.
India will take on South Africa in a three-match ODI series after completing the T20 matches. The ODI matches will be played on October 6, 9, and 11 at Lucknow, Ranchi, and Delhi respectively.
BCCI sources told that Samson could be named the Indian vice-captain of the 3-match ODI series with Shikhar Dhawan leading the side.
With the upcoming T20 World Cup in October, senior players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, and Rishabh Pant may rest during the ODI series.

The Kerala-born 27-year-old player had been a part of the Indian side in multiple T20I series following the IPL 2022. However, he had limited opportunities in the playing IX due to the 2 wicket-keepers Dinesh Karthik and Rishabh Pant. Samson didn’t feature in any of the 5 T20Is against South Africa in June. Also, he had played only one match in Ireland T20I series.
Samson was part of the squad for the ODI series against Zimbabwe and India sealed the series 3-0. In total, Samson represented India in seven ODIs and 16 T20Is. Also, he was the captain of just-finished India A side vs New Zealand A ODI series at home. In the series, Samson finished as India’s top-scorer, and India A crushed New Zealand A by 106 runs in the 3rd ODI to sweep the series 3-0.
Samson scored a half-century in the 3rd match (54 off 68 balls) and joined forces with Tilak Varma to put together an impressive stand. He registered scores of 29, 37, and 54 in the series. Reports state that his excellency in playing is considered for selection in the ODI series against South Africa.
The batter Rajat Patidar will make his ODI debut in the coming South Africa series.
